Abroginal textiles take center stage!

The Melville Island Collection of textiles is as much a thing of beauty as it is an attempt to preserve the work of local artists and to the benefit a community!

With immense attention to detail to the indigenous artists who are the true inspiration produced designs that are 100% hand-screen printed. The art of Cornelia Tipuamantumirri, the oldest living artist on the Tiwi Islands (which include Melville Island, Bathurst Island, and 9 smaller uninhabited island in Australia’s Northern Territory), is one which is featured. Within the collection, there are two distinct pattern styles: the Jilamara and Rokini. Both “styles” employ variations of “mulypinyini pwanga” (known as lines and dots). All of the printing has been done on 100% Eco Linen to ensure they’re producing a top-quality product.

We love the element of history and culture that’s literally weaved into these beautiful designs!

The local artists say that the “Territory” is their inspiration… vast and unknown, creativity seems high among all the artists.

Cornelia Tipuamantumirri was born in Pirlangimpi, Melville Island around 1930. She has been an influential figure in the Tiwi community  throughout the years, passing on skills and knowledge to generations who have followed. In 2012 Cornelia was named a finalist in the 29th Telstra Art Award. In addition, Cornelai is the grandmother of North Home’s creative director.
