This year’s offerings at Art Basel Miami proved impressive, but that is always expected. There were great finds, old friends and some especially impressive presentations. Enjoy here some of our favorites!!

Jean-Michel Basquiat, Made in Japan I, 1982. Acrylic and oilstick on paper mounted on canvas. Note the seemingly haphazard mount. At Helly Nahmad, Art Basel Miami.

Miquel Barcelo, Fuerte marejada (Rough Seas), 2003, at Acquavella, Art Basel Miami, 2016.

Detail – of Barcelo’s painting – mixed media on canvas, 81″ X 99″

Theaster Gates, Standing Man Monument, 2016. Stoneware with re-purposed stone fragment at Richard Gray Gallery.

Interesting work from Chicago’s reknowned community activist and multimedia artist Theaster Gates that utilizes his understanding of ceramics.

Sterling Ruby, TRIASSIC, 2016. Acrylic, elastic and treated fabric on canvas at Brussels’ Xavier Hufkens, Art Basel Miami.

Miami collectors Rosa & Carlos De La Cruz added another mixed media on canvas piece from this body of work, Burning Landscape, 2016, to build out their depth of collection into this artist’s work. Sterling Ruby was born in Bitburg, Germany in 1972, and lives and works in Los Angeles. The De La Cruz Collection is open to the public at no charge in Wynwood, and opens each year concurrently with Art Basel Miami.
