The Museum of Art and Design – Experiencing Digital

Wim Delvoye (Belgium, 1965) Twisted Dump Truck, 2011.

This weekend we visited the Museum of Art and Design (MAD) in New York City. The exhibition Out of Hand: Materializing the Post-digital was so inspiring! The show explores creativity in the 21st-century, uncovering advanced methods of computer-assisted production. The scope of possibilities with 3-D printing and beyond, have us jumping to explore new furniture techniques for custom pieces. The show continues through June 1, 2014, it is a must see!! Don’t just take our word for it, read the New York Time Review.

Julian Mayor (United Kingdom, 1976) Clone Chair, 2005.

Julian Mayor created this chair by using detailed drawings and measurements of a historic Queen Anne side chair. She then created a “low-resolution” model of the chair by cutting sheets of plywood and hand assembling them to construct the chair. The end product is reminiscent of a computer wireframe of an object, allowing the viewer to grapple with the complexity of the transition from computer generated to physical object.
