Nicolas Carone (Italian-American, 1917-2010)
The Disciple, 1963
Oil on canvas
54 ½” x 65 ½”
Nicolas Carone incorporated aspects from the classical figurative tradition in combination with the instinctive painting processes of Abstract Expressionism in his work. He completed this painting, The Disciple (1963) right before he became a founding faculty member of the New York Studio School in 1964. We believe this piece may be one of his rarely exhibited “imaginary portraits”.
