Kato Yusukage (Japan, b. 1964)
Large twisting vessel, 2009
Stoneware with oribe copper glaze

Kato Yasukage’s sculptural vessels are known for their perfect balance and richness of glaze – this, an example of his green copper glazed oribe ware. He is one of the very few artists left in Gifu still wood firing in the manner of his ancestors. The progenitor of his distinguished line of potters established the first Mino kiln in 1574 – and he is a fourteenth generation master potter.
