The artworld has been a buzz around the exciting activities of art collectors in China, especially in Shanghai with the soon-to-open “Tank Shanghai” by renown collector Qiao Zhibing.
Zhibing, who lives in Shanghai, made his money in nightclubs and karaoke bars in Shanghai and Beijing. He told ARTnews that the artists in his collection include Sterling Ruby, Theaster Gates, Thomas Houseago, Olafur Eliasson, Michaël Borremans, Damien Hirst, Wilhelm Sasnal, Danh Vo, and Chinese artists like Zhang Enli, Liu Wei, Xu Zhen, Qiu Xiaofei, Yang Fudong, and Ou Yangchun. A member of several museum boards, Qiao started collecting in 2006 because he one day “realized I’d love to fill in my blank walls,” he said. He plans to open Tank Shanghai, a combination art museum and recreation facility in 2017.
Shanghai Night is a club space located on 400 Caobao Road that showcases Qiao Zhibing’s private contemporary collection that opened November 9, 2016. For more information, see myartguides.com
