“The misconception of totalitarianism is that freedom can be imprisoned. This is not the case. When you constrain freedom, freedom will take flight and land on a windowsill.”
— Ai Weiwei
Ai Weiwei’s work bridges the gap between art and activism. In his newest exhibition at Alcatraz (America’s most visited national park) Ai Weiwei explores the notion of freedom in America’s most famous federal penitentiary. Both of the works pictured above look at the idea of “flight” contained in an enclosed space. The discomfort of movement in rigid spaces is palpable, allowing visitors to grapple with the complexities of power and control.
