Art Basel Miami 2013: The Satellite Fairs

The satellite fairs at Art Basel Miami have become show-stoppingly good! There are now so many of them that it is hard to hit them all, but we managed – who doesn’t want to go see art on the beach?! Our first stop was to Untitled, where we found one of our favorite pieces of the show (above): Julian Charriere (Swiss, b.  1987) & Julius Von Bismarck (German, b.  1983), Some Pigeons Are More Equal Than Others, 2013 at the Dittrich & Schlechtriem Gallery

Artists Charriere and von Bismarck have performed and exhibited their “Pigeons” piece in Copenhagen, Venice and Berlin.  They actually install a pigeon-trapping apparatus to catch and airbrush pigeons (with vibrant, non-toxic dyes) as they move through the city.  Read more here!

Next we went to Art Miami….there was a fantastic mix of emerging artists and household names. The galleries were eager to speak with you and educate you on artists they were showing. And finally the best part of all, not everything was astronomically expensive. Here are a few of our picks from Art Miami:

Lalla Essaydi (Moroccan, b. 1956), Harem #14C, 2009
