The Studio Museum of Harlem has an exhibition up now through March, 8th titled Speaking of People: Ebony, Jet and Contemporary Art. This show uncovers the ways the Ebony and Jet magazines have been used in contemporary art. We find Hank Willis Thomas’ work particularly interesting. He has taken pinups from all of the past Jet magazines and wallpapers a room of the museum in them. The piece allows the viewer to question “conventional” beauty and black beauty through the eyes of one of America’s leading African American publications. To read more visit, ArtNet.
