Photorealist painter Andrew Sendor is known to produce black-and-white paintings from fictive documentaries. These still moments depict a cast of characters that populate Sendor’s stories, drawing the viewer into the artist’s world where time is questioned and history is clearly referenced.
“I don’t like to use the word fiction“, says Sendor. He continues, “People who look for symbolic meanings fail to grasp the inherent poetry and mystery of the image. No doubt they sense this mystery, but they wish to get rid of it. They are afraid. But if you approach a painting as if there isn’t a puzzle to be solved, then other things will happen.” It’s as if the artist is teaching us to release a completely analytic worldview, showing us a new way to experience reality.
“We were mesmerized – dazzled, even.” says his dealer Angela Westwater. Certainly his draftsmanship is amazing and narratives are oftentimes an enigma.
