Contemporary art prices have yet again shocked the art industry. This week the Contemporary Art sales hit New York City, with staggering estimates and fantastic works by Andy Warhol and Rothko. The Sotheby’s sale, while a great success in our eyes, was a bit of a disappointment for them. Lead by the sale of an important Rothko piece, which sold for $45 million, the sale only tallied $344 million although they had estimated $420 million. Across town Christie’s blew the doors off of the Contemporary market. They broke artist record prices for 11 artists and achieved the highest total price for any auction in any category, a whopping $853 million!
