Earlier this year, Dupont Underground sponsored the Re-Ball! Competition. Dupont Underground is an organization to attempting to revitalized 75,000 sq ft of abandoned subway stations underneath Dupont Circle in Washington DC. The stations, built as a trolley station in 1949, have been abandoned since1962. Two years ago, Dupont Underground signed a five year lease for the space. The Re-Ball! Competition used 650,000+ plastic balls that were previously used in the National Building Museum’s 2015 The Beach.
The winning design was submitted by Hou de Sousa, a New York based architecture and design firm. The design called for the plastic balls to be glued together into 3×3 cubes. The cubes could attach to each other via small Velcro tabs. The entire exhibit is interactive, allowing visitors to build with the cubes, creating their own designs and geometries.
