George D. Horst’s Forgotten Collection to be Sold!

64 paintings virtually unseen for almost a century will be auctioned off by Freeman’s on March 30th.  Amassed by George D. Horst, a Pennsylvania business tycoon at the turn of the century, these paintings have been hanging in the family home since the custom-built gallery was constructed in 1929.  A patron of the arts, Horst initially wanted his paintings to be used as teaching tools and displayed in a separate museum in Reading, PA.  His one request was that the building be central in location in order for everyone to be able to have access to these treasures.  Without his knowledge, construction began on a plot of land thought unsuitable by Horst.  Frustrated, he decided to keep his artwork for his own personal pleasure.

The collection of fine American and European paintings is in excellent condition.  Among the artists to be auctioned are: Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Edward Willis Redfield and Daniel Garber.
