Suno is a designer fashion label with a great story behind it. Co-founder Max Osterweis teamed with up-and-coming clothing designer, Erin Beatty, after several visits to see his mom, who bought a house in Kenya after falling in love with paradise during an extended African safari. Initially collecting kangas (the traditional scarfs worn by African women) for their sheer beauty and uniqueness, it seemed like “why not” when they met a talented Nairobi seamstress who cut the kangas apart and stitched them back together to make “one-of-a-kind” articles of clothing. These became an instant hit and Osterweis and Beatty were instantly thrust into the fashion world. Now, in addition to the African designs they began with, Suno has been inspired by Japan, India and Peru, among others. This season, the duo was attracted to Jermey Sutton-Hibbert’s photographs following a group of displaced Roma refugees who “struck it big” in the scrap metal business. These former nomads now have large, beautiful homes, yet they still chose to wear their traditional style of clothing as homage to their past. The mix of traditional and modern makes this collection breathtaking!
