Irish domes at Finnlough
In under three hours from Dublin, you can reach one of Irelands’s most scenic locations. Serenely located on a 45-acre peninsula surrounded by Lough Erne, this area of Northern Ireland has so much to offer. Another reason to visit this location in the Republic of Ireland recently emerged. A new resort called FinnLough opened… a lakeside haven where travelers can actually turn off their “on switch.”
Recently a different type of luxury lodging options have sprung up all over the world; “bubble hotels” are a way to experience a cool travel trend. Unlike yurts and glamping tents, bubble domes offer uninterrupted views of the surrounding landscape and the night’s sky. Coincidently, with the recent pandemic, many people believe, now more than ever, that it is good to be in your own bubble.
Ireland’s new luxury hotel offers 180-degree transparent forest domes that are perfect for anyone who desires to sleep in nature and under the starry sky… albeit enclosed.
Some have likened the bubble domes to snow globes; ones set within a mythical forest. It is indeed easy to imagine that you are in a fairytale. The domes are outfitted with luxurious four-poster beds with heated mattresses, free-standing stone-cast bathtubs, record players stocked with vinyl, and telescopes. To ensure that even in the coldest of cold weather days visitors stay warm, the bubble domes have underfloor heating. Situated in a private forest, there is no fear of someone stumbling upon your “bubble” at any point in time… each dome has its own locked gate.
The story behind Finnlough goes back to 1983 when Rosie and Bobby Beare first began to cultivate this haven… delivering unforgettable escapes to many over many years. When Gillian and Michael, the second generation, returned thirty years later, they brought along with them a desire to preserve their childhood “special place” and the unique property their parents loved so dearly.
Since 2013, Gillian and Michael have worked to maintain (and partially reclaim) the property’s magic. Inside, local craftsmen design clean-lined interiors that reflect the beauty of natural materials and bespoke detailing. The pair has remained committed to doing everything possible to remain environmentally conscious and sustainable.
Courtesy of Guides, “In the middle of the night, as you lie in your bed in your Bubble Dome at Finn Lough estate, you feel that you need only stretch your arm up, and you could take charge of The Plough, and cut a swathe through the Milky Way. The agriculture of the stars is, suddenly, your dominion.” We haven’t yet been; but we can’t wait to experience this magic ourselves… one day. Hopefully, soon!
