Isaac Julien at MoMA

Since we loved Isaac Julien’s piece The Abyss, 2013 in Miami, we made sure to visit his MoMA exhibition Ten Thousand Waves.  What a moving experience!!

Ten Thousand Waves (2010) is a 55-minute moving image installation based upon the Morecambe Bay tragedy of 2004, in which more than 20 Chinese cockle pickers drowned on a flooded sandbank off the coast in northwest England.

The installation is staged on the streets of both modern and old Shanghai, and includes music and sounds that fuse Eastern and Western traditions.  An immersive sound installation adds to the experience, as the viewer experiences waves of past and present, and even is given a glimpse into how the film was made.

A must see!! Now through February 17.
