Janet Echelman’s Urban Sculpture

We have followed Janet Echelman’s work for sometime now. Her ability to transform spaces with her unique sculptures is uncanny. Her sculptures are often the size of buildings create large statements for entire cities to enjoy. This is exactly what Echelman did in Boston. She transformed a green space in Boston’s financial district into a creative and dynamic environment. The sculpture, As If It Were Already Here, was made of hand sliced rope and twine. It occupied the space where a highway used to divide the city of Boston, and served as a reminder to what used to be. The sculpture, suspended 600ft in the air, changed colors as daylight shifted, bringing light to the once dull greenway!

Numerous cranes were employed to attached the massive sculpture to four buildings in downtown Boston.
