Just in time for summer- stretching the boundaries of planters

Payla Hayes’ experience with gardening helped her cement her place within her art. Not wanting to produce another boring, square pot, Hayes started using translucent silicone to make planters that could shift as the plant grew inside. Innovative indeed! It’s been said about Hayes by MoMA chief curator of painting and sculpture, Ann Temkinthat that she has managed to “penetrate what might seem to be pretty stiff boundaries between design and sculpture as well as between nature and culture.”

We are drawn to her silicone planters and love the idea that they “grow” with the flowers planted inside of them!

Notice the silicone planters which prove malleable and the material’s translucent nature. Allowing light to pass through its edges and to see the root system of the plantings within. Ingenious!
