Making Place: The Architecture of David Adjaye at the Art Institute of Chicago

The architectural exhibit currently at the Art Institute of Chicago, “Making Place: The Architecture of David Adjaye”, showcases a series of spaces for both living and working. Adjaye’s designs for private houses and artist’s studios in London brought him notoriety in the early 2000’s. Born in 1966 in Tanzania, Adjaye focuses on the interior and strives to create designs with an authentic relationship to context.

Designing with an overall sense of enclosure, Adjaye creates a highly choreographed articulation of space. “When used, windows frame views or create moments of pause, and they rarely face the street. The houses open at the back or at the top rather than at the front. All of these decisions are made with the intent of protecting the privacy of the inhabitants. Indeed, the buildings recall sanctuaries or temples—timeless types of shelter.”
