Uruguayan and New York-based architect Rafael Viñoly designed the impressive Laguna Garzon bridge to connect Maldonado (a relatively inhabited area) and Rocha (mainly untouched). Allowing 360 degree views of the amazing lagoon, drivers are forced to slow their speed while circling over the environmentally sensitive region. At the center is a pedestrian spot where people can sit, sunbathe or fish, all the while enjoying a beautiful vantage point.
An arial view of the Laguna Garzon Bridge in Uruguay. The unspoiled waters are the main initiative behind this design. Preserving the sensitive local ecosystem is a must; thus, cars needed a reason to slow down while driving above the lagoon.

With 6 years of thought behind, the construction phase was relatively quick at about a year and a half.

SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY THE VIEW… that’s what the Uruguayan government is requesting you do as you circle your way above the Laguna Garzon lagoon.
