High end designers typically stick to what they know, when what they know works perfectly. Recently though, the Italian label Marni decided to forge into the interiors market with a fun line of furniture. Marni was started in the early 1990s and it has always been synonymous with bright colors, high-end construction, and interesting patterns. It is so exciting that the brand has decided to apply the same spirit they have always felt for clothing to a brand new collection of furniture and homewares.

The entire collection is sold exclusively through the online luxury site, Farfetch.

The new collection is called Zooterico and draws inspiration from the zodiac signs. Interpreting the zodiac signs through abstract colors and materials is a different way to look at astrology. The collection features twelve different products in a number of color-ways.

Marni chose to design chairs, stools, screens, and benches as well as candle-holders, mats, trays, and fruit baskets. As part of the small collection, each piece represents one of the twelve signs of the horoscope.

The Milanese fashion brand has always had a playful spirit and a history of humanist values that translates to an experimental approach to materials and colors. Furthermore, Marni has a unique flair for mixing shapes and prints that initially might not look as though they belong together.

Each horoscope sign was abstracted into a geometric symbol and then given to Columbian artisans who are long-standing collaborators with Marni. The craftsmen translated the designs into furniture and the resulting collection became part of a social and cultural project that Marni has been planning for a few years.

Marni is well-known for venturing into design while supporting Columbia’s remote communities. The company’s aim has proven productive in actively preserving endangered craft traditions and helping to propel them into present-day. Marni initially connected to the artisans in Columbia because the local artisans draw inspiration from the natural beauty of the surrounding, rural world.

The materials used are simple… the furniture was constructed from natural fiber and recycled PVC. The smaller accessories such as the trays were made from resin and the candle-holders were made from terra-cotta. Finally, the folding screens, umbrella stands, and basket bags were made from fique fiber.

Since each piece is one-of-a-kind, you can rest assured that what you purchase will not be found anywhere else… and more importantly, that the object will make quite a splash!
