Nils Staerk, a gallery in Copenhagen, has an infectious energy. The program is strong and the artists they support present a well-rounded and passionate contemporary exploration into abstraction, conceptual and the figural. We were first turned on to them through a trip to Copenhagen and a visit with Superflex, and we have since grown to become huge fans of Nils Erik Gjerdevik, both in paintings and in ceramics. Eduardo Terrazas is another artist to watch, and we too loved the piece that is going to the MCA from Basel Miami 2015. Thank you to Caroline at Nils Staerk who has introduced us to Mads Gamdrup, another artist who is exploring photography in a new, exciting and very visual way. Enjoy some of our favorite work by Gamdrup, and the some words from the gallery about his work.
Mads Gamdrup works with the potential of monochromatic photography and its strength as artistic statement in relation to a number of phenomena, such as distance, transparency, spirituality and materiality. Gamdrup explores the boundaries and possibilities of photography using Newton’s and Goethe’s color theories. Using a special technique called Monochrome Colour Noise, each color’s exceptional resonance is manipulated by creating degrees of transparency within the individual color unit, from pure color to pure light.
Gamdrup uses a color palette assembled over the years from the pixilated noise, which has come into being in the transfer of his own analogous photos to digital ones. In the darkroom he has defined the colors on paper via different wavelengths of light, visualized as gradings of stripes, drips or bubbles.
Mads Gamdrup (b. 1967) lives and works between Copenhagen and Trondheim.
