Newest Art Basel locale: Hong Kong!

Art Basel Hong Kong opens today! The fair is the newest of all of the Art Basel fairs, having just launched in 2011, through Art Basel’s purchase of Art HK, which started in 2008. The fair is during the informal art week in Hong Kong. This week provides a vast array of options for people traveling to Hong Kong, including special restaurant openings and even jewelers and banks pulling out the stops for the week.

This year, according to Axa insurance, the fair has $3 billion in art of display by 233 galleries from 37 different countries. The dealers come in homes of Asian collectors in search of marquee pieces of art. And at last night’s preview of the fair, the selling had already begun. To learn more about the sales read this Bloomberg article.

Many galleries choose to bring modern and contemporary art by Asian artists to this fair, including this work that White Cube has in their booth by Liu Wei.
