Nils Erik Gjerdevik’s fantastic ceramics (and paintings!)

In his paintings, Nils Erik Gjerdevik often works with a specific, systematic and formal arrangement of the picture plane, and then distorts it, presenting a shift in its logic. His paintings move beyond flatness and pattern, pushing the forms and texture of the surface into three dimensions. This is why it makes so much sense that Gjerdevik also works in ceramics, producing organic and formal pieces that are clearly in his own visual language.

A masterful colorist, his recent paintings often feature color pairings. Notably his work both in ceramics and especially his paintings are meant to be seen in person. We have seen his work both in Copenhagen and in Basel, and can vouch for the detail, the seductive, layered nature of the surfaces and the overall optical effect on the viewer – the work, especially of late, is consistently fantastic!! We look forward to a presentation of his work at Nils Staerk in Miami this December for Art Basel. Until then, enjoy a preview of his work on our blog, and on the artist’s website here.
