Old Master or First Modernist… that is the question with Goya

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is staging the “Goya: Order & Disorder” retrospective currently.  Now through mid-January, this thematic exhibition is a must see!

Goya was capable of recreating the Old Masters style seamlessly.  In his 50’s, after serving four separate kings and having the notoriety of being chief court painter, he isolated himself after becoming deaf.  This sad existence lead to his greatest works (Self- Portrait with Doctor Arrieta, 1820) and his most famous paintings.  This is where the “Goya we know” evolved – how lucky are we to have this retrospective at our fingertips?
