Quite unusual, bone china gets glazed

Typically, it’s porcelain and stoneware that get glazed because the higher temperatures the material can sustain brings about reactions that create strong colors. Japanese ceramics designer, Reiko Kaneko has spent years experimenting with glazing china, even bone china is in her repertoire. Her Exploring Glaze collection uses simple white china overlaid with different reactive glazes in a range of colors. Kaneko lets the glaze run down the form. White areas remain throughout which gives a striking contrast. Quite intensive, each item goes through at least 3 firing processes. Bone china is a little different because firing must be done at lower temperatures; thus creating strong colors is more of a challenge… a challenge that Kaneko quickly embraces.

Reiko Kaneko loves the chemistry behind it… nothing is predictable and nothing is a “sure thing”. That’s what makes all of Kaneko’s pieces so unique and interesting!

Reiko Kaneko’s Exploring Glaze collection was featured in the London Design Festival 2015.  Simple geometic froms of white china are overlaid with a variety of glazes.
