When an industrial designer joins forces with a Formula 1 genius, the result is bound to be interesting. Terrace Woodgate is one of England’s most known designers, known for his stripped-down and modern, yet elegant approach to detail and manufacture. He specializes in furniture and lighting. His unlikely co-designer was John Barnard, a race car designer that has worked with both McLaren and Ferrari.

The marriage of these two Brits was something that not many people imagined. Yet the result of their partnership is quite amazing!

The table debuted in 2008, and until recently it had never been shown in the United States.

Years ago, Barnard was instrumental in introducing two new designs into Formula 1. One design was the carbon fibre composite chassis first seen for McLaren in 1981. The second design was the semi-automatic gearbox that Barnard is credited with implementing for Ferrari in 1989.

Using this state-of-the-art carbon fiber technology, Barnard helped Woodgate design this incredible 20-foot-long table. The razor-thin surface measures a mere four inches; and even though it seems unbelievable that it can maintain the weight of plates and glasses, it easily can!

David Van Eyssen was so captivated by the table that he was inspired to create a video that follows dancers Candace Cane, Lauren Avon, and Ghislain Grellier. These dancers move on and around the table with apparent ease and complete grace.

The table’s finish is also a throwback to Formula 1. The polyurethane lacquer finish gives the table a mirror-like sheen… just like vehicles on the circuit.

The radius corners, round legs, domed feet, and rounded edges accentuates the slimness and seamlessness of the seemingly effortless design.

Made for the British company Established & Sons in 2008, the table recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary at the Los Angeles design gallery “Twentieth”. The limited-edition table was given a new home amount the presence of other equally stunning pieces such as an acrylic chair by Sami Hayek and sexy silk rugs by Henzel Studio.

Terence Woodgate said about the table, “The table being compared to a work of that importance made me realize that the reflection in the finish is extraordinary in its own right.”
