Sand, sugar and salt make for great furniture materials!

When Fernando Mastrangelo decided to start his own line of outdoor furniture, he planned to use unusual casting materials such as sand, salt and sugar. Per his desired outcome, the pieces looked grainy in texture and slightly crystalline in form… exactly what Mastrangleo was looking for.

Now, verifying that they stood up to the elements was the next vital step. This Brooklyn-based sculptor designed, among others,  planters and chaises and hand-dyed cements in a full spectrum of hues for a tactile finish. Among the aggregates, Mastrangelo mixed porcelain, quartz and black granite. The effect is perfect and M Materials couldn’t have come along at better time for those of us wishing to daydreamabout our outdoor patios?

Weighing 350 pounds, Mastrangelo and his team made this indoor-outdoor chaise lounge of crushed porcelain and cement. 150 pounds of crushed porcelain were mixed with resin and set for 16 hours. Afterwards, 120 pounds of cement were poured into a wooden mold around a steel armature, which provided structural support to the form.
