Servomuto is an Italian lighting design firm that has set the goal of revisiting (courtesy of the company’s website) “a classic object such as the lampshade with a contemporary and distinctly sophisticated twist.” Since 2010, the Milan-based company has stood out among other lighting brands due to their personal interpretations on what light really is.

The collection was unveiled in 2022 at Miami Design Week.

The Venus Collection was inspired by the beauty of the female body. Freely suspended, the product is made out of metal and Lycra and it references “a slender skeleton and a soft and elastic skin that covers it.” Since the 1950s, Lycra has been both hated and beloved by women… hated for its feeling of constriction and beloved for enhancing a shape thanks to its elastic characteristics. The Venus Collection adheres to similar references.

In furniture, Lycra has also been used and experimented as it is a perfect coating. Similarly, it is also perfect for lighting because of its transparency. For the Venus Collection, the body is made of metal where the center houses metal rod partition folders with Lycra fabric. The Lycra fabric is available in sand, gray, blue, lilac, burgundy, and orange; if none of those work, clients can create their own lamp.

Palazzi is another collection where the light installation is in fact architecture. The work of renowned Italian architect Aldo Rossi was the inspiration for the Palazzi, particularly his playful Teatro del Mondo in Venice. The pendant is made up of a lightweight Kvadrat fabric that is pleated; however once it moves, the fabric reveals the lamp’s polished brass structure. Palazzi is constructed by Italian craftsmen to beautifully exhibit a play on light.

The Circus Chandelier was inspired by 18th-century decorative fixtures typically found in Bohemia's luxury homes and palaces.

The beauty with Servomuto is that there is truly something for everyone. The brand is able to provide standard, classic products and also more complex, playful pieces… each fixture is privy to the same high level of craftsmanship. The company’s point of references and inspiration from different points in time bring about styles atypical in today’s market.

Adding to its exclusivity, each design has a limited run that ensures the customer has a special piece that is sure to last the test of time. Perhaps the company is best described here, “Servomuto recounts its story of artisanal craftwork, of one-off creations and experiments in new aesthetics through the reinterpretation of unusual, old or forgotten objects.”
