Chicago is better off for having Theaster Gates. Our local art star, his work to reinvigorate South Side neighborhoods is inspiring; the New York Times refers to his work as large-scale urban intervention.

It is in this spirit that we wrote our first art newsletter for 2015, the spirit of cultural rebuilding. We believe there is a sector of art works that you must pay attention to; as truth in history is revealed, society is better for it. We have chosen a handful of our favorite artists from the past 100 years until today, African American, who bring their unique take on culture and history to our attention. We encourage you to click on the links included for further reading and give thought to what each artist is trying to achieve.

Enjoy, and stay warm!
