Sotheby’s Bunny Mellon auction yields close to $160 million

Last week, Sotheby’s auctioned off close to $160 million worth of art amassed by Bunny Mellon.  These 43 pieces were among the most beloved of this 103 year-old philanthropist who died this past March.  Many of the favorite pieces among their collection had already been donated to public museums, notably, the National Gallery of Art in Washington.  This amazing art collection contained works ranging from the 17th century to contemporary pieces by 20th century masters.  Mark Rothko was Mrs. Mellon’s favorite artist and she acquired a number of his canvases.  The peak piece was Rothko’s “Untitled”, 1970, which was painted at the end of the Rothko’s career and sold for $39.9 million.
