Japanese artist Yutaka Sone has lived in California long enough to call it home. In such, it isn’t strange to understand the architect’s love of both cityscapes and nature. His newest project, a very long 16 years in the making, is sculptures of Hong Kong, Manhattan and Venice. Each city street was meticulously carved out of beautiful white marble. Based on photos, helicopter rides and personal walking experiences through the cities, Sone begins by making elaborate 3-D models by hand. Sone was lucky enough to find a group of traditional stone carvers in a small Chinese village who “adopted” him and next to whom he spent over a year producing his visions. Mr. Sone is a long way from the fisherman’s village where he was born, but his childhood experiences certainly shaped his creativity and future!
