Fumihiko Maki was the superb architect who created the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto to house more than 1,000 works of Islamic art. Among the most treasured pieces are very early illustrated Korans. You’ll need plenty of time to peruse all the artistic, intellectual and scientific contributions of Muslim civilizations on display.
The Brazilian-granite structure allows for light to stream inside, and in keeping with common Muslim design features, there’s an open-air courtyard. Opened in September 2014, this museum will continue to evolve in its offerings, and on the agenda is a host of exhibitions, many of which will focus on contemporary Muslim art.
