Wonderfully strong colors and voluptuous shapes dominate Ruy Ohtake’s works

We love the intense power in Ruy Ohtake’s buildings. As one of Brazil’s most prolific architects, Ohtake has designed over 420 projects in his homeland; a feat that’s made more remarkable by the fact that Brazil has been plagued by economic, financial and political turmoil for much of that time.

The gamut is large- among others, he’s built hotels, expressways and cultural institutions- all of which have a couple of things in common: surprising shapes and vivid colors. Not everyone is a fan of his unique works. Nevertheless, Ohtake, son of the acclaimed Brazilian artist, Tomie Ohtake who was known for being a “colorist”, isn’t easily offended or steered. Ohtake says, “If you want to create something new, original, you have to be aware that it could be controversial”. Lucky for all of us, Ohtake isn’t easily influenced!
