Patricia Urquiola designed a fabulous plastic chair in 2010 for Kartell that she named the Comback Chair, after the traditional 18th century Comb Back Windsor Chair. Seven vertical members are spread out to mimic one’s back, with horizontal connections at the top and arm supports. This version is made from a single mold from batch-dyed thermoplastic technopolymer. Reminiscent of the chairs gracing the verandas of colonial homes or the more familiar chairs of our grandmothers, the Comback chair is a contemporary way to live with a sense of nostalgia.
Pilar Viladas told us years ago that Kartell was bringing the past to the present. We were reminded by a photo we found of her article about Claudio and Maria Luti’s Milanese townhouse. Not only is it an intelligent throw back, but it is spectacular in this modern townhouse, particularly as it is paired with a Picasso drawing and faux marble paneling.
