Federica Bubani
Federica Bubani is an Italian designer who creates elegant pieces in minimal and simplistic designs. However, there is nothing simple about her forms. Bubani works with ceramic, wood, and rope; but she favors ceramic and out of that… she creates beautiful, unique vases.
Bubani received an artistic education and opened her own studio in 2003. At this point, she took a ceramic course and began experimenting with new techniques and new materials. Bubani spent a lot of time researching materials and favored using ceramics to make a variety of decorative objects. In 2011, the artist started offering a new collection of objects… mainly lamps that combined ceramics and wood.
One thing that remains consistent is that Bubani always uses a muted palette of pastel colors that work together seamlessly as she experiments with function and form. There is always a playful approach to design and each piece is unique in that she creates it to have its distinct energy and “personality.”
In 2012, Bubani won the Open Design Italia prize for her “Nordic Lamp.” The lamp consists of two parts made from ceramic. Together with the wooden parts and the grey cable, the lamp mimics Scandinavian design. The two ceramic bases get machined on a lathe by hand; this provides a warm and textured aesthetic that still has the feel of handmade. These two parts are joined by parallel wooden “arms”. No wonder this interesting and unique piece won an award!
Bubani is quoted as saying, “I try to think a new vision for ceramic products that are used and that decorate our homes, simple and clean lines that are easier to insert in all the ambient.”
