Despite delays, the magnificent Musee des Confluences in Lyon, France finally opened its doors in December. Taking cues from London, the city of Lyon has been in the process of revitalizing it’s docks for some time now… this is certainly the finishing touch! Set where the Rhone and Saone Rivers merge, the new museum is an airy structure of crystal, glass and intersecting steel. Just as important, Musee de Confluences offers unparalleled views of France’s 3rd largest city that change with the time of day, the season and the weather.
Resembling a spaceship more than a traditional museum building, more than 2.2 million objects of natural history are housed inside this modern structure of irregular shapes and protruding elements which stand elevated over a public plaza. Spaces within are connected by a curving bridge-like structure. Quite an addition to an already striking city…
