Ode to Soulages is well deserved!

In May of 2014, Musee Soulages opened in Rodez, France. The museum holds 500 works of Pierre Soulages, donated by the artist himself on two separate occasions (one in 2005, the other in 2012). Paying homage to his birthplace was important to Soulage which is why Rodez was chosen as “the spot”. The museum is housed in a series of rusty black steel cubes and was designed by the Catalan architects RCR. RCR used cladding made of Corten steel, also known as weathering steel. When exposed to the natural elements, this material creates a protective layer of rust. Corten steel ages perfectly with time, which was important to the 95 year-old artist. And, the location is ideal for those seeking reflection and relaxation.

The museum sits on top of a slight hill. Also within the museum is a cafe run by Michelin three-star chef, Michel Bras. Soulages insisted that the items on the menu be affordable for the visiting art students.

At 95, it’s been known that Soulages still paints every single day. Shown here, at his museum, he’s standing in front of one of his large, primarily black canvas’.
