Origami birds emit light

Umut Yamac, a London-based architect and designer with Turkish heritage, has caught our attention! In 2011, Yamac established his own practice emphasizing the relationship between the different levels of engagement present among the user and the product.

The Perch Family was originally designed in 2014 as a limited edition of only 20 pieces. Recently, though, an additional “family” was added. This “family of lights” features 6 sculptural lamps of origami birds perched on branches, made of synthetic paper, steel and brass. Once touched, the branches sway, as do the birds sitting atop.

Handmade in London, these bird-shaped lights are elegant, functional and fun!

Perch Light for Moooi, 2016

This piece was launched at Salone del Mobile in Milan. The 6 sculptural lamps of origami birds are as much artsy as they are useful.

Yamac experimented because he didn’t like seeing the light source within the lamp. This thought evolved into thinking of how to house the light and this was Yamac’s take on origami.

The process of making the lamp is very delicate as it it’s made from archival paper, LEDs and brass. Testing different types of paper allowed Yamac to choose the one where the grain filtered the light perfectly!
