Sabre Paris was founded thirty years ago by Francis Gelb. The multi-generational French goldsmith and his wife, Pascal, created Sabre after spending seven years learning from the family business. The meeting between Francis and Pascale was a pivotal point for the pair, both personally and professionally. Working together, and with the support of Habitat, the famous English chain of home-furnishing stores, the pair founded a brand that has become recognized for their bohemian spirit, free-spirit design, and utmost artistry.

The Gelbs were intent on doing away with the (courtesy of the website) “codes of tableware to offer color, materials… and above all job and fantasy next to the crockery on the table.” The first model in conjunction with Habitat was called “Sabre;” however following, the pair decided to invest in their own cutlery collection. Paying homage to the initial model, the company was named “Sabre Paris.”

Sabre Paris quickly rose to the top of fine-quality French flatware hierarchy. Adhering to the philosophy that “exceptional tableware [is meant for] daily use, not just special occasions;” many high-end restaurants and enlightened homeowners now choose to feature the flatware and cutlery.

At the heart of everything is quality… from selecting specific materials to finishing and polishing. The blades are produced in France and made from a stainless steel and carbon alloy. The acrylic handles are handcrafted for “softness, ergonomics and aesthetics” and the colors are mass-dyed. Most important is Sabre’s gold-smithing skills; this is how the company separates itself from others. Different from most other cutlery brands, almost all of the cutlery is hand-assembled in the workshop near Paris. Gelb adds, “We assemble an average of 5,000 pieces of cutlery per day.”

One of Sabre Paris’ most iconic collections is called the Bistrot Collection. The four-piece collection was inspired by some of the Gelb’s favorite eating and drinking establishments. The design is traditional with an element of a modernity, “the styling is simple, the rivets are visible, while the colors and materials stand out nicely.”

The design of the handles, slender and riveted, adds a timeless quality and demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship. The shiny metal finish demonstrates a contemporary element. However for those looking for a more traditional design, a vintage finish is available. In addition to the four-piece collection, a teaspoon, cake fork, soup soon, dinner fork, dinner knife, and spreader can be purchased.
