Acanthus Award: Interior Design November 2016
Excellence in Interior Design Award: Lakeview Residence
Suzanne Lovell Inc. with Vinci Hamp Architects.
Suzanne Lovell Inc. was honored to receive two Acanthus awards in 2016 from The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Chicago-Midwest Chapter. We’re proud to support the work of the ICAA to advance the practice and appreciation of the classical tradition in architecture, urbanism and the allied arts.
Suzanne Lovell Inc. worked with a team of design professionals to collaborate on the complete restoration of a full-floor apartment in a pre-war building designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw with the goal of honoring and invigorating the significant classical architectural details throughout.
Every detail of every surface was studied meticulously. Materials were sourced from around the world. Mechanical systems are cleverly concealed behind plasterwork, grillwork or millwork. Original details are either flawlessly restored or painstakingly recreated – paying special attention to scale and proportion – with the intent of honoring the elegance of the original details while updating the residence to twenty-first century standards through the lens of historical accuracy.
An impressive collection of Art Deco furniture was specified in close partnership with the Client. Important examples of work by twentieth century masters Eugène Printz, André Sornay, Paolo Buffa, Jacques Adnet, Edgar Brandt, Jules Leleu, Maurice Jallot, De Coene Frères and Maison Jansen are featured throughout. Custom furniture and area rugs are designed to complement and support the Client’s antiques and art collection.
At the heart of the project is a Client whose vision and passion inspired a team to revitalize an iconic residence at the pinnacle of craft, quality and design.
The Jury Remarked:
A seamless blend of interior architecture, art and furnishings. A mature and confident approach to balancing existing with an understanding towards the new. Nuanced and sophisticated.
A beautiful and respectful renewal and re-establishment of an architectural interior that is at times background to the owner’s collection and at others assertive in distancing itself from conventional interior types.
Interior designer connected the dots between the art and original architecture with knowledge and sensitive detailing. This was a merger that could easily have gone awry but was handled with great care and concern for the owner’s collection. Beautiful project that looks and feels like Chicago.
