HOME OF THE YEAR & BEST VACATION HOME

Ah, Wilderness

Having enjoyed their original family cottage in southwest Michigan’s Harbor Country for decades, the client knew it was time for an update. Rather than renovate the existing lakefront structure, they made the difficult decision to take it down and rebuild from the ground up. They partnered with frequent collaborator Suzanne Lovell on the interiors, knowing that the renowned designer would imbue the new home with warmth and nostalgia.

“This residence is all about the private lakefront view,” states Lovell of the project’s top priority, adding, “We created architecture that maximizes the view with a grand double height window wall in the great room that includes an oversize hearth, a long dining table and ample seating. The screened-in porch is comfortable enough for napping, and the space provides an opportunity to dine alfresco. Covered poolside lounging is ample, and a nearby firepit creates multiple gathering areas to experience the night sky and the crashing waves with family and friends.”

The project did face some challenges, explains Lovell. “The wind, weather and light from the lake required us to be diligent in adding each layer of protection, from UV film to the window wall to protect the client’s art collection, windbreaker blinds for the screened-in areas, and blackout shades throughout. We [ensured] that the home [could be] a year-round escape in both summer and winter climates.”

Asked to point out her favorite detail of the space, Lovell doesn’t hesitate. “The integration of knotty pine throughout the home with dark stone floors proved to be a major success, adding a wonderful warmth and function for the family and their beloved dogs with next to no maintenance.”

Reflecting on the finished project, Lovell notes that the client was thrilled with the result, as was her own team. Simply put, says the designer, “The home has a wonderful feeling and soulful spirit.”
