Each stands powerfully on its own, yet these layers are also dependent on one another—from the beginning foundation to the finishing details. With a background in architecture nurtured early in her career at Skidmore Owings & Merrill, principal Suzanne Lovell launched her namesake firm in 1985. Over four decades, the company’s multidimensional approach has resulted in a portfolio of sensational, luxurious residences where craftsmanship is revered, eye-catching art has a defining voice, and a bold sense of playful intrigue always abounds.

Lovell’s discerning eye has taken her from private family estates to sleek yachts and tropical retreats—like this Naples, Florida, penthouse. The owners, longtime clients with a flair for entertaining, wanted a home that felt at once relaxing and fearless. Lovell began by opening up walls, enhancing the dramatic Gulf views. She then created a palette of endemic textures like rope-wrapped columns, brass fixtures, and custom shiplap with punches of lively hues. Finally, contemporary works by artists like Cecily Brown and Yoshitomo Nara punctuate the scene, adding energy to each space. Sculptural furnishings and lighting, too, bring in drama—including the media room’s tremendous hand-carved walnut doors by Caleb Woodard.

A boundary-pushing design for the area, this residence conveys Suzanne Lovell Inc.’s ability to create deeply expressive interiors with an architect’s eye and an artist’s hand. After all, it’s in the layering—thoughtful, deliberate, and inspiring—that a residence becomes a personal work of art.
